This is old school versus new school.
Cam Newton is the 21st century version of the quarterback. Big, strong, athletic, and mobile, with a laser-like arm.
Peyton Manning is a throwback. He is a classic drop back, pocket passer. He dissects defenses with pin point passing. Watching Manning drop back to throw is like watching the greats from yesterday, such as Johnny Unitas, do their thing.
In his prime, Manning had the firepower in his right arm to make all the throws. Today, at 39, he no longer possesses the arm strength of his youth.
However, his brain processes what is happening on the football field like high-tech, pentium processor computer. He seems to know where everyone is at all times. He is still dangerous.
Newton is the 21st century athlete. He is brash, bold, and some would say, cocky. His touchdown ‘dabs’ has drawn the wrath of opponents and fans alike. When things are going well, which they often are in Carolina, he is all smiles during the game.
Manning is far more businesslike. The most you will get from him after a score is a fist-pump. Not much smiling from Peyton during games. He is too busy working.
But the game evolves. And this could be the passing of the torch from one generation of player to another.
So, take your pick with Manning and Newton, you really can’t lose.
They are clear proof there is more than one way to play the quarterback position, and be great at it.
