Basketball’s Michael Jordan _ who celebrates his birthday with Brown _ is like that, so are athletes like baseball’s Willie Mays, or track and field’s Wilma Rudolph.
Jim Brown was that kind of player.
The man many will call the greatest football player of all time came to the Browns in 1957 as the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft out of the Syracuse University, where he was not only an All-American in football, but he was an All-American in lacrosse. In fact, some also regard Brown as the greatest lacrosse player in the history of the sport.
Brown was a big man, standing 6-2, 231 pounds, with an incredible combination of speed, power and balance. He was practically unstoppable. He played nine seasons, and retired at the age of 29, after rushing for 1,554 and scoring 17 touchdowns in the 1965 season. Brown averaged 104 yards rushing per game, and 5.2 yards per carry, which are both all time records.
After retirement, Brown went on to pursue other interests, such as acting. He has appeared in several movies over the years. He also stood for social justice, speaking out on issues of the African-American community. Two links below will give you a look at Brown’s lacrosse career at Syracuse, and also a highlight package from his NFL career.
