The 1-6 Detroit Lions fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi following Sunday’s incredible offensive collapse against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford  seven  times, and battered him around like a rag doll, in their 28-19 at Ford Field in Detroit.

It was the worst performance of the year for the Lions’ offense, which has been pathetic, despite having playmakers like Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate III and tight end Eric Ebron.

But what made coach Jim Caldwell, or perhaps someone above Caldwell, decide to fire Lombardi, along with offensive line coach Jerimiah Washburn, and assistant Tim Heffernan, was the feable effort against the Vikings.

This was more than the Vikings defense being pretty good, which they are. This was the Lions’ having absolutely no clue what the Vikings were doing. It is rare to see a professional football team not have any idea what the other team was doing to them.

This was one of those times.

Quarterback coach Jim Bob Cooter is taking over as the offensive coordinator. One thing we know is he can’t possibly be any worse.
