Let’s hope the reports speculating that Manny Pacquiao will fight unbeaten Terence Crawford (27-0) in what Pacquiao said will be the final fight of his career are true.
Crawford, is hungry, and is coming into his own. He was superb in defending his WBO Junior Welter Weight crown Saturday, with a victory over Dierry Jean (10-round, stoppage) in Omaha, Nebraska.
If Pacquiao wants to go out facing a challenge, Crawford is the man to fight.
And, really, all this last fight will do is determine Pacquiao’s legacy. Certainly, the 36-year-old native of the Phillippines, who plans to enter politics when he retires, is a hall of famer. He is the only eight-time division champion in boxing history. He has earned millions of dollars.
But how much did his lackluster showing against Floyd Mayweather (49-0), who some consider the best pound-for-pound boxer of all time, hurt his legacy?
Pacquaio (57-6-2) can’t afford to lose the final two bouts of his career, and be regarded as one of the all-time greats. However, if he can knock off Crawford, the man who looks to be boxing’s next superstar, that will the best retirement gift possible. It will also be a measure of redemption.
