Williams came into the U.S. Open on a roll, having won the the Austrailian, French and Wimbledon titles, and looking to capture her fourth consecutive U.S. Open title. But on this day, Vinci played better. “She played literally out of her mind,” said Williams, of Vinci. As much as anything, Williams lost because simply no one wins all the time. Vinci’s outstanding play is unexplainable, and unapologetic. She gets credit due for a great victory.
But not even this defeat can taint what Williams has accomplished during this incredible run. What is even more amazing is she is doing this at 33, (soon to be 34 later this month) when most players are well past her prime. But Serena is playing some of the best tennis of her life. And even on a day when she did not have her best stuff, it took a brilliant effort by Vinci to pull off the upset.
To put into context what she accomplished during this torrid streak: She won the 2014 U.S. Open, the 2015 Austrailian, French and Wimbledon. She was 28-0 during that run, and 31-0 until today’s loss. Williams remains at 21 major titles, which is one behind Graff’s 22 in the open era. It is only matter of time before she ties, and breaks, Graff’s record. Even at darn near 34, Serena is the best in the game, and arguably the best to ever play the game.
