Powell says Andre McGee, Louisville’s graduate assistant, paid her up to $10,000 to set up recruits with women between 2010 to 2014. She even included her own daughters in the escort service.
These are stunning accusations against one of America’s premier basketball programs, and its coach. Rick Pitino, who is denying any knowledge of such activity.
Pitino has also denied any knowledge of such activity, telling the Indianapolis Business Journal:
“I am shocked over this. My heart is just taken out of my body and broken.” Pitino said when the story broke he talked with McGee, and former players, who all denied the accusations in the book.
There is no doubt that Powell is trying to sell her book: ‘Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen’. And she is doing a hell of a job of marketing it. The allegations against Louisville is a national story. There is no doubt that she is a leading candidate for one of the worst mother’s ever, for getting her daughters involved in prostitution.
However, because Powell is trying to sell a book, and because she is a terrible mother, doesn’t mean she isn’t telling the truth.
This doesn’t sound as far-fetched as some of you may think. College athletics is probably one of the most corruptible entities we have. You can start off with the fact that coaches earn millions of dollars, television networks earn millions more, along with the shoe companies.
However, the stars of the show, the athletes, don’t get a damn thing. The fact they get a scholarship is no longer fair trade off for the millions that are being made off of their backs. If Powell’s allegations are true Pitino should be shown the door. If he didn’t know he is not doing his No. 1 job which is looking out for the well being of student-athletes that he has taken responsibility for. If he did know then he should never be able to coach an NCAA basketball team again. I get the feeling that the Louisville men’s basketball team is never going to be the same.
