on fire. Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland, the 18-year-old from Columbus, Ohio,
captured her third consecutive title, winning the gold medal in the all-around at the World Championships.
She is the first woman to ever achieve that
accomplishment. Finishing second, and taking home the silver medal, was Gabby Douglas, the reigning Olympic
champion. Biles, Douglas, and the American team also captured the team title.
The USA is so dominate in world gymnastic
these days that many observers feel their best competition comes in practice.
But this is so great for Biles and Douglas. They
are demonstrating that African-American athletes are capable for succeeding in
a myriad of sports, if given an opportunity, and an introduction.
Sadly,
in many African-American communities around the country, sports like gymnastics,
tennis, golf, swimming aren’t readily available, thus denying kids who might be
great at one of these, sports, access and opportunity.
Linked below are Biles and Douglas in action, and a story regarding the competition.
