It was Jan. 20th, 2012. Mr. President was at the world famous Apollo Theater for a fund raiser his re-election in November. In the crowd was Rev. Al Green, the legendary soul singer, was attending. When Mr. President heard that Al was going to be in the audience, he told his staffers he was going to sing a line from his song. But, no one was sure if the president was just kidding, or if he was really going to go through with it.
After some thought, the President let go. I doubt there is any other president in the history of our nation _ with the possible exception of Bill Clinton _ who even knew who Al Green was, much less the lyrics from his song. For many African-Americans that was an affecting moment because it was the President connecting specifically with the African-American community in a way no other president could, or would, have done before.
Now, it did nothing to solve the issues of that time, as we were digging out of a devastating recession, and still in the midst of ongoing issues overseas. Nonetheless, it was a memorable moment.
While that was in fun, there was a somber moment recently when the President was speaking at the memorial for the shooting victims at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It was a powerful, moment, that endeared President Obama even more to an African-American community that adores him. Below is a posting of Mr. President laying down his version of ‘Let’s Stay Together’.
