Williams, who played nine seasons in Charlotte, before signing with the Steelers during the offseason, was also hoping to wear pink accessories in his Steelers’ uniform to honor his mother all season.
However, the NFL denied his request, saying the pink accessories can only be worn during October in support of breast cancer awareness month. In an interview with ESPN during Monday night, Williams expressed his disappointment. “The same way it made you feel after you heard it — like, man,” he told ESPN. “He (Troy Vincent, NFL a league VP) told me no (in a phone call). I’m assuming they are telling everybody else no as well. … It wasn’t about selling it. You know, and I know and everybody else knows before I made the phone call.
“It’s not just about October for me; it’s not just a month, it’s a lifestyle. It’s about getting women to recognize to get tested.”
Williams plans to paint the tips of his dreadlocks pink as a way to honor his mother and support breast cancer awareness. He said the NFL has no problems with the color of his hair, because it is no part of the uniform.
Williams is just one example of today’s athletes sharing their gifts and talents with their respective communities. There are a lot of people who think today’s athlete is uncaring. But it is unwise to link a few who may be self-centered, with a majority of players who are civic minded.
