He is expected to undergo surgery today, and will likely have to wear a mask when he returns. If there is some good news to this, it’s unlikely he will miss a significant part of the season. Rose has had an incredible assortment of injuries that have cost him 234 games over the past four years.
All of these injuries, and the way he has handled them at times, has marred Rose’s career. His talent was once unquestioned. He is a former league MVP. But the No. 1 talent a pro athlete has to have is availability. If you are great player, who can’t stay healthy, you really are no help to your team.
Shortly before this injury Rose talked about his impending free agency, which is still two years away. Rarely, will an athlete discuss his free agency intentions even when their contract is about to expire. But Rose, who still has two years left on his $94 million contract, admits that he is enamored by the money.
“This whole summer I had tunnel vision,” Rose said. “My mindset was just making sure that I was working out every day and spending as much time as possible with my son. And focusing on those two things. Making sure my family is financially stable, as far as seeing all the money that they’re passing out in this league. Just telling the truth. Just knowing that my day will be coming up soon and it’s not for me. It’s for [two-year-old son] P.J. and his future, so that’s what I’m thinking about now.”
Unless there is a change in his ability to stay healthy on a consistent basis, Rose is not going to have quite the big payday that he envisions.
