There are only a few players that have come through the National Football League that command that type of attention. Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss are two of them. Johnson, Moss, and Jerry Rice will get a lot of nods as the best receivers to ever play the game.
The comparison of Johnson and Moss is fun because they are very similar. They possess freakish athletic ability and size that causes major nightmares for defensive backs. Both players can beat you deep, they both can go get jump balls, and they both have game-breaking speed. The one difference in terms of athleticism is Johnson’s sheer size. He checks in a 6-foot-5, 240 pounds. Moss is 6-4, 210.
Johnson’s size allows him to catch more balls over the middle than Moss, which makes him a tad more difficult to defend. Moss was more of a perimeter receiver, preferring to operate on the outside.
Although their games are very similar, their off field demeanors are far different. Moss was a very controversial figure, and while he was a great teammate in most regards, his actions sometimes brought undue scrutiny to the team.
Meanwhile, Johnson is considered a model citizen and a beloved teammate, and controversy free. In his 14 year career Moss caught 982 passes, for 15,292 yards, 156 touchdowns and 15.2 yards per catch. Johnson, who is entering his ninth season, has 643 catches, 10,405 yards and 74 touchdowns, and 16.1 yard per catch average.
