The double standard that exists in many parts of America was put in full display the other day by Michael Vick, who said that Colin Kaepernick needs to cut his afro, and not wear cornrows in order to get a job in the NFL.
“First thing we got to get Colin to do is cut his hair,” Vick said on FS1’s Speak for Yourself. “I’m not up here to try to be politically correct but even if he puts it in cornrows, I don’t think he should represent himself in that way, in terms of the hairstyle. Just go clean cut.”
I wonder if Vick thinks Kaepernick should dance a jig, stand on the side of the sidewalk when a white man passes, and say ‘yes sah’, and ‘no sah,’ too?
Damn, Mike. How can you make such a statement, after all the things you have been through, and the racist attacks you have experienced?
And why do we live in a world where Green Bay’s Clay Matthews is celebrated for his long, golden, hair? His antics on the field, like grinding after making a big play are laughed off? And, then if a brother has a ‘fro, and celebrates too much after a big play, it’s a problem. Of course, the great disappointment here is to have Mike Vick make that asinine point about Kap needing to improve his appearance.
