It is a “He said, he said” tale of what happened to Madison, after a rash of injuries in high school made Fleck _ allegedly _ decide the speedy, 5-foot-8, 162 pound receiver, was no longer the player he once was, therefore no longer a fit for the WMU program.
Madison feels WMU and Fleck pushed him aside, and reneged on promises. Fleck and WMU say that is simply not so.
Only Fleck and Madison know the real truth to what happened, and this is no judgment of either party.
Instead, this is a tale that should let potential college athletes know the world of college athletics is far different from high school on many levels.
First, and foremost, is that coaches are paid to win football games, and when they don’t win, they get fired. Therefore, they are always looking for better players, and they are always looking to upgrade, and a scholarship is a year-to-year proposition.
Some coaches will sell their souls for victories, but there are others who are men/women of their words. Hopefully, your future college athlete will cast his/her lot with a coach with character and integrity.
However, it is wise to remember that college athletics is a business on so many levels, and this story looks at one part of it.
