When asked about the Muslim ban proposed by his friend, presidential candidate Donald Trump, one of the NFL’s great passers, decided to hand the ball off.
“Can I just stay out of this debate?,” said Brady, speaking with WEEI radio in Boston. The football great said he doesn’t talk politics. “Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all of my friends. That is what I have to say. He’s a good friend of mine. He’s always been so supportive of me.
“For the last 15 years, since I judged a beauty pageant for him, which was one of the very first things that I did that I thought was really cool that came along with winning the Super Bowl. He’s always invited me to play golf and I’ve always enjoyed his company.
“I support all my friends in everything they do. I think it’s pretty remarkable what he’s achieved in his life. You’re going from business, kind of an incredible businessman and then a TV star, and then getting into politics. It’s three different career paths. I think that is pretty remarkable.”
So, as my mom would say…. hell, as what most moms would say: “If Donald Trump jumped off a bridge, you would support that, too? Or, in this case, if he shows bigotry onto another religion, you good with that, too?” My mom would also say, “Boy, you must be a damn, fool.”
Hey, let’s be clear that Brady is a grown man. He can do and say what he wants, and choose his friends as he wants. However, he also knows that because he is a public figure and can do cool things like judge beauty contests, play great golf courses with celebrity billionaires, that he is going to be judged differently.
And, in this case, if he stands by the bigotry of Trump, a presidential candidate, people can only assume he is cool with banning Muslims. Brady has to know he can’t just keep his mouth closed in a situation like this. He could have easily have said, “While Donald is my friend, I disagree with his proposal.” But to say nothing, is weak on his part….unless he agrees with Trump.
Either way, Tom Brady the citizen is going to lose a lot of respect from a lot of people.
