First and foremost, we don’t know how true the sexual abuse accusations facing Chicago Bulls star point guard Derrick Rose are. According to various reports, Rose is being sued in civil court for allegedly drugging, and participating in a gang rape of an ex-girlfriend. The incident allegedly took place more than two years ago.
The Rose camp is looking at this as a money grab. Obviously, the plaintiff feels differently.
One way or another, this issue will eventually get resolved. No one is going to jail because it is a civil suit. The plaintiff will either win compensation, lose, or the two parties will reach an agreement and settle out of court.
It is as simple as that.
However, there is going to be nothing simple about the rest of Derrick Rose’s life going forward. This issue is going to stay with him.
It won’t matter what the court determines or what settlements were signed. The stigma that comes with the charge of something like this never goes away, especially in today’s world of social media.
Social media allows you a myriad of places to express and read opinions (by the way, I appreciate you choosing this site). If you have an agenda against Rose, you can propagate it as much as you like.
For example, in Pittsburgh an online petition has racked up nearly 10,000 signatures protesting the Steelers’ signing of quarterback Mike Vick, because of his past legal troubles with dog fighting.
I’ve already seen a few jokes regarding Rose, and the sex allegations. You can bet the memes aren’t too far away. Now, toss in all the noise from talk radio and internet chat rooms and the story goes on and on and on. It’s the world we live in today. Rose is going to have to deal with it.
