ESPN’s Bomani Jones made an incredible point the other day on how some in society can find one thing offensive, but practically the same thing portrayed slightly differently, inoffensive.

While sitting in as a guest host on ESPN’s popular Mike and Mike radio show, which is also televised simultaneously on the ESPN television network, Jones wore a shirt that read ‘Caucasians’, a parody of  the traditional Cleveland Indians logo.

The lettering and the logo of a white man, was the same script and logo design of the MLB Cleveland franchise.

The team’s ‘Chief Wahoo’ logo, stereotypical of an Indian, has long been considered offensive, just as the logo of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

“The reason they won’t get rid of Chief Wahoo, which is completely indefensible, is they could still sell stuff with it. They can say they’re gonna de-emphasize it, but they’re not just gonna set money on fire,” Jones said on the air.

Cleveland now wears the block C logo, instead of Chief Wahoo.

“I thought [the Caucasian shirt] was the exact same thing, and I could see the value in the design, so I was like, hey, we might as well give this a run.

“The statement is obvious. This [shirt] is the same thing. What we have here, this is the same thing that goes on with the logo for the Cleveland Indians, right?

“So, to have a problem with the logo of this, would be to have a problem with the Indians,” he added. “But if you’re quiet about the Indians, and you got something to say about my shirt, I think it’s time for introspection. I think that’s a fair thing to ask.”

Jones is absolutely, right. He made a visual example of the point people have been making for years regarding the racial insensitivity of mascots like the Redskins and Indians.

According to reports, ESPN asked Jones to zip up the jacket he was wearing during the telecast. Jones did so, covering up the ‘Caucasian’ lettering. The network that bills itself as the ‘worldwide leader’ in sports said they made the request, so the conversation could move on to topics of the day.

Jones undoubtedly offended a lot of people by wearing the shirt, which precisely the point.

If you find someone wearing a ‘Caucasian’ tee shirt offensive, you should also find Chief Wahoo, and the Redskin logo offensive.
