It is hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since John Carlos’ and Tommie Smith’s iconic black power salute at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. We had to honor of interviewing Dr. Harry Edwards, one of the catalysts of the ‘activist athlete’ movement on the TheAfricanAmericanAthlete.com radio show.
Dr. Edwards, 74, who organized the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR), which led to the 1968 ‘Black Power’ protests by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, has been on the front lines of social activism throughout sport his entire career.
He has worked with giants such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and Muhammad Ali. Dr. Edwards has always spoke truth to power. Dr. Edwards discusses his career, sports activism, Colin Kaepernick and the NFL, LeBron James, and other topics during his 36-minute interview. It is indeed a must listen.
The African-American Athlete show airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST. Check out our Facebook page @AfAmAthlete and TheAfricanAmericanAthlete.com for links and call in numbers.
