I am saying this not because I am not a huge Steeler fan, although coach Mike Tomlin is a fraternity brother of mine (Kappa Alpha Psi, of course). So, I am never really pulling against the Steelers, unless they play my beloved Lions. Oh yeah, Lions’ coach Jim Caldwell is a Kappa Man, too.
For me, this is about Mike Vick. This is about the journey he has made since the terrible days in which his involvement in dogfighting sent him to prison. This is about the redemption of a man, and how you can rise from the lowest of lows, and re-claim yourself.
Now, there is also part of me that wants to see Vick play well, just to see the expression of some of the 20,000 Steelers’ fans who signed a petition, protesting the franchise’s decision to sign Vick, back in the summer.
If Vick gets hot while Big Ben is out, some of those very same people are going to be all up on him. But he will know that some who cheer don’t really give a damn about him as a man.
I am writing this to say I do care about his humanity, and I am glad to see him rise from depths.
