Props to the Lansing (Mi) city council for honoring the ‘Lansing Catholic High School 4’ with a proclamation, for their decision to protest racism and injustice by kneeling during the national anthem before the start of several football games last fall.
Seniors Michael Lynn III, Matthew Abdullah, Roje Williams and junior Kabbash Richards felt it was important to call attention to racism and injustice in America. The young men made their stance even though they knew they would face punishment from the school. They saw their playing time reduced, and starting positions taken away. Nonetheless, they felt it was worth the sacrifice.
And, for sure their actions have at least forced the school to address the issues of race. Last month Lansing Catholic announced that it would form a ‘multicultural diversity student group’, to discuss race and diversity issues.
But clearly, there is a faction that still exists in the school that is pushing back. Recently, Lansing Catholic announced that any student who kneels during the anthem during games this winter will not be allowed to compete in that game.
Speaking at the city council meeting, Lynn, the school’s star quarterback, spoke boldly.
“There are people that have called our actions disrespectful, and I ask that those people find the disrespect in the injustices that we are calling attention to,” said Lynn.
By the way, Lynn and Abdullah, have since transferred from Lansing Catholic.
