A recent column in The African-Amercan Athlete raised the possiblity of HBCUs conducting its own national championship for football.
One thing that will not be a problem if HBCUs ever decide to hold a national championship game, is fan interest. Recent ratings from the FBS bowl season demonstrate the audience, and interest that HBCU football has. The Celebration Bowl, a thrilling, 41-34 shoot out won by MEAC champion North Carolina A&T over SWAC champion Alcorn, produced impressive numbers. In addition, the attendance at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta was 35,000. It drew more than the FCS championship game.
