Props to Procter and Gamble for their commercial ‘The Talk’, which takes a peek at life of Black America over the years. The commercial, which lasts just over two minutes, shows Black America in several stages over the decades. It seems to begin in the 40’s or 50’s, and ends in today’s era.
As you might expect, there are those who find the commercial insulting, even racist. Of course, that thinking is precisely why this effort it important.
Whether you agree with the premise of the commercials, or not, Proctor and Gamble deserves credit for trying. They could have simply tried to sell us soap like they have for decades. They could have repeated the overworked ad tendencies, and used a racial stereotype by having a black person rapping, singing, or dancing. Instead, they have heard us and have moved to sell to us by demonstrating that they “get it”. They are making an effort to understand our struggle.
The vignettes show black mothers touching on issues very real to most black families.
I certainly remember some of those conversations being directed towards me. Since I have become an adult, I have passed on some of those same conversations with my children.
P&G plans to air more commercials along these themes in the future. It will be interesting to see where they chose to go. Check out the video.
