Barry was one of the NFL’s greatest players, and a testament to his greatness is the fact the lowly Lions’ made the playoffs six times in his 10 year career (1989-98). He left us breathless, and wanting more.
The amazing thing about Sanders was at 31, he was actually getting better. During the first part of his career teammates teased him because there were occasions when he got chased down. The final three years of his career, that simply stopped happening. Sanders finished with 15,269 yards rushing. Had he stayed it is easy to have seen him (barring) injury, crash the 20,000 yard rushing barrier.
What was also so intriguing about Sanders was his humility. He shunned the spotlight. On the field he just did his job, and went about his business. He was beloved by his teammates, who often referred to him as the “Little Fella’. He played the game because he loved the sport. Then he got to the point where it wasn’t fun anymore, so he quit. He went home, and never considered coming back.
We still miss his brilliance. But we always have his highlights….
