But Vick did his bid, stood up like a man and took it, and has been pretty much a model citizen since he came back to the NFL.
Nontheless, there are thousands who simply won’t forgive him. We live in a world where a guy like George Zimmerman brags about killing young Trayvon Martin without much public contempt (outside of the black community, where he is called the murderer that he is). In the meantime Vick, who paid his dues to society and apologized for his actions, is perpetually vilified.
The contempt for the Vick signing was so bad that more than 20,000 thousand Steelers’ fans signed an online petition in protest.
Now those fans are going to have to make a choice between their feelings for Vick, and their feelings for the Steelers. Star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down with a knee injury in Sunday’s win over St. Louis. He could be out four to six weeks.
Vick will have the Steelers franchise in his hands until Roethlisberger returns.
We are about to see the hypocrisy of some of these fans. I assure you some of the very same people who hated the fact that Vick signed with the team, will cheer him on if he plays well. Suddenly, his past won’t mean as much as it did before. Now, if he doesn’t play well it will only embolden those who hated him to begin with. The vitriol towards Vick will be unbelievable.
No one knows how this game works better than Michael Vick. If he lights it up _ and I certainly hope he does _ he will take the cheers and adulation in stride. Vick knows in the hearts many of the people cheering him don’t give a damn about him as a person. They just care about his ability to run and throw a football.
