Muhammad Ali released a statement speaking out against Donald Trump’s xenophobia against the Muslim religion the other day.
As he has done all his life, Ali’s words were delivered with courage and conviction. It is not surprising to those who have followed him throughout his career to speak out when he sees an injustice. With all due respect to Floyd Mayweather as a boxer, who lays claim to being the best ever, he is not even talking about the same level of greatness that we are when we discuss Ali.
Floyd’s brilliant career in the ring 49-0 stands the test of time. But Ali’s claim to greatness goes beyond the boxing ring.
In an era when blacks were considered second class citizens, Ali challenged white society. He spoke out about injustice, inequality and racism.
It’s a shame that his health has weakened his speech, but clearly not his mind.
For those of you who didn’t have the opportunity to hear the young Ali, the video link below is a tremendous retrospective. And, it gives you an idea of why he is so beloved, and why he is considered ‘The Greatest Of All Time.’
