These days, the best execution, the best matchups, and best rivalries occur at the halftime battle of the bands. That’s why at HBCU schools, no one leaves their seats at halftime. They take their breaks during the game.
So, with that in mind, each week The African-American Athlete will preview a great band matchup. On October 17 it is Texas Southern versus Southern.
Southern University’s ‘Human Jukebox’ marching band put on a spectacular show in Athens, Ga., recently, drawing a standing ovation from 92,000 fans of the University of Georgia. Although the Jaguars were trounced on the playing field by the Bulldogs, the Human Jukebox, quite literally, blew the Georgina marching band away.
Many will argue that Southern’s sparkling reputation as a marching band is well earned. However, the Jukebox will face a far different challenge this weekend when they face off against Texas Southern University’s ‘Ocean of Soul’ marching band. For some reason, the ‘Ocean’ doesn’t get the national acclaim that some of the other traditional HBCU bands like Southern, Grambing, Tennessee State and Florida A&M do, but they are just as talented. Posted are the ‘Ocean’ and ‘Jukebox’ in action.
