One thing I can say about Donald Trump is he is an equal opportunity offender. During racist, bigoted, hate-filled campaign that, incredibly, led to his election as America’s 45th president, the man insulted damn near everyone who wasn’t a white man.
As a black man, I was taken aback by his demeaning attitude towards the black community, coupled later during his campaign by his awkward, half-hearted attempt to gain black votes.
Trump was offensive even when he was trying to be sincere to black America.
“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed…. what the hell do you have to lose?,” Trump said.
Damn, I guess I am lucky no one broke into my house and stole my computer before I wrote this piece.
His outreach to the black community demonstrated his total ignorance, and complete lack of insight he has of black folk.
Nonetheless, there is a silver lining to the Trump-phenomena.
Trump’s message of hate has quite literally pulled the hoods off of most of the undercover racists, who now feel justified to express their racism since the president-elect is a racist, bigot himself.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), there have been more than 400 incidents of hateful acts and intimidation in the eight days since the election. Exactly 136 of the acts have been anti-immigrant, and 89 acts have targeted African-Americans. (See the SPLC chart)
This hatred doesn’t come to the surprise to America’s black community.
We always knew racist were there, even following the election of President Barack Obama in 2008. We saw the total disrespect shown to President Obama, and his wife, Michelle, who presented herself as the First Lady with extraordinary elegance and dignity.
Recently, a woman called the First Lady an ‘ape in heels’, and remarked about how refreshing it will be to have Melania in the White House.
Really?
Well, I can say Melania will be a trendsetter in many ways. She will be the only First Lady have shown her ass to the world and posed for a camera fondling another woman.
Let me be clear, this is not to say that every person who voted for Trump is a racist. That said, everyone who voted for him takes responsibility for his lack of character, his total unfitness for the office based on his incredible lack of knowledge, and his bigotry.
The message here is this to all of those who believe in Trumps mantra ‘Make America Great Again’ means returning to a place and time in this country where black and brown people, along with poor people, and women were nothing more than second class citizens _ and white men ran everything _ can forget that.
You will not be dragging people out of their homes like you did Emmitt Till. You won’t come marauding into black communities terrorizing families like you once did. There ain’t gonna be no cowering in your presence , and no more ‘Ye-sah’, ‘No-sah’ and staying in your place.
No, you will be held accountable for your actions. In some cases you will shunned by decent Americans who will chose not to soil themselves by association with you. In others, you will be met with resistance in the form of protests, legal actions, lost employment, and the votes against your positions. Lastly, if the need is to legally protect our personal lives and families, you will be met with force.
This is indeed a new day. This is a generation that is going to demand its equal rights and protections provided by the constitution.
So, whatever these people who envision ‘Making America Great Again’ means some return to a time of black submission, you can forget about that. Some of you may think this is a new day with Trump’s election. However, I am here to tell you that it is a different day, too.
