I can’t help but think about the old R&B classic, “Does Your Mama Know About Me?”, after reading about the story of the late Gene Upshaw, and his wife, Terri (Buich), who is white. The two met in 1983, and were married in 1986.
When Terri’s family, who own a famous restaurant in San Francisco, learned she married a black man, they disowned her. Gene and Terri enjoyed a great marriage up until the day the former Oakland Raiders star, and head of the NFL Players Union, died in 2008. To this day, Terri’s family has continued to disown her. The Buich’s have never even met their grandson’s, who are 25 and 28. Hard to believe that people can still carry around that kind of hate. Well, maybe it isn’t that hard to believe.
