Falcons on Tuesday. Hester is still hoping to play this season, but at age 33, and with the decrease of emphasis of kickoff, it could be the end of his career.
At some point, Hester should be the first kick return specialist to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
How can you be the absolute best player at your position in the history of the game, and not get into the Hall of Fame?
Said one NFL coach is dealing with Hester:
“You don’t ask a woman if she is pregnant. You don’t eat half-priced sushi, and you don’t kick the ball to Devin Hester.”
That’s good advice that not enough NFL coaches have taken over Hester’s 10-year career.
Hester was selected with the 57th pick in the 2006 draft out of University of Miami, He turned into an electrifying, game-breaking kick returner.
He impacted games far beyond the fact he returned a record 20 career touchdowns (including the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI). He consistently forced teams to give up field position, especially during the prime of his career with the Bears.
Teams would be far more willing to give the ball to Chicago on the 30-yard line on kickoffs, than kick it deep to Hester. He had a similar impact on punts, as well.
As mentioned earlier, Hester is hoping to sign with another team at some point.
Of course, whether he plays again or not, Devin Hester’s career should ultimately end in Canton, Ohio, when he is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
