It’s been a tough few weeks in Motown for the Detroit Lions family.  Mel Farr, a running back for the Lions from 1967-73, and a popular figure in the city for years, died suddenly on Monday. Farr was 70.  His death comes just a few weeks following the passing of Lions’ Hall of Famer, Charlie Sanders, who passed away on July 2,  following a long bout with cancer.

Farr was one of the earliest NFL players to parlay his athletic career into the world of business. He was one of the first African-Americans to own a Ford dealership. Farr owned several dealerships throughout Michigan, and the Midwest. He was adamant about helping former players understand the transition from the playing field into the business world. He also loved to have fun making his famous Mel Farr Superstar commercials.

Farr and his Lions’ teammate, NFL Hall of Famer, Lem Barney, were close friends with Motown legend, Marvin Gaye.  Farr and Barney provided the  voices that you hear talking on the beginning of  Gaye’s iconic, hit,  “What’s Going?” They each received a gold record for their contribution.
