I just think it is one of those things. It is not like there has never been top tier running backs in the NFL. John Riggins of the New York Jets and Washington Redskins, Larry Csonka of the Miami Dolphins, are hall of famers. Mike Alstott of the Tampa Bay Bucs, Rocky Bleier of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently, Peyton Hillis in Cleveland, have all enjoyed success.
The Detroit Lions hope they have found the next outstanding running back, who happens to be white. Zach Zenner, an undrafted, free agent running back out of South Dakota State University has been the surprise of the Lions’ preseason.
Zenner rushed for more than 2,000 yards three consecutive years in college. Anytime you put 2 grand on opponents three consecutive years it is phenomenal, no matter what level you are playing. You have to remember the other team is game planning just to stop you.
But even against Missouri and Nebraska, Zenner shined. He ran for 103 yards (6.8 per carry) against Mizzo, and lit up Nebraska for 202 yards. Check out his highlight package, which includes a 99-yard touchdown run against the Kansas Jayhawks.
