Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy is not one to hold back his feelings on issues of today. In the past he has spoke out in support of athletes using their platform for activism, and took on issues of racism, .
And now SVG is taking on the NCAA, and what he feels is the exploitation of athletes. In an interview with the Detroit Free Press Van Gundy addressed the recent recruiting controversy involving several big time college programs.
“The NCAA is one of the worst organizations, maybe the worst organization in sports, they certainly don’t care about the athlete. They are going to act like they are appalled by all these things going on in college basketball. Please, it’s ridiculous and it’s all coming down on the coaches.”
“People were against players coming out of high school and made a lot of excuses, but I think it was racist. I have never heard anybody up in arms about (minor league baseball and hockey),” Van Gundy told reporters. “They are not making big money and they’re white kids primarily nobody has problem.
“But all of the sudden you have a black kid that comes out of high school and make millions, and that’s a bad decision. But by-passing college to go play for $800 a month in minor-league baseball? That’s a fine decision. What the hell is going on?”
