Howard University pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of college football Saturday. The Bison traveled to Las Vegas to open the season against UNLV as 45 point underdogs.
The Bison won the game, 43-40.
Now, while UNLV football doesn’t have the history and reputation of its basketball program, is it still a FBS program. It has all the things that Howard, and most HBCU and FCS schools don’t, outstanding facilities and financial resources.
But the Bison had someone the Running Rebels wished they had at quarterback: Caylin Newton, the younger brother of NFL star, Cam.
The 5-foot-11, 194-pound freshman from Grady High School in Atlanta dominated the game. He passed for 140-yards, rushed for 190-yards, and scored three touchdowns.

Howard’s struggles in recent years (3-19 over the past two seasons) led to the hiring of new coach Mike London. In his first game London orchestrated arguably the greatest upset in the history of college football.
With London in charge, and the dynamic Newton running the show, Bison football will be a program worth watching.
